CNN is at it again.

Pope Francis said this week it’s selfish for couples to have pets instead of children. To choose animals over children leads to a loss of “humanity,” he argued, adding it’s also harmful to civilization.

In response, CNN noted the pontiff is known to pet animals.

Gotcha!

“We see that people do not want to have children, or just one and no more,” Francis said Wednesday. “And many, many couples do not have children because they do not want to, or they have just one — but they have two dogs, two cats.”

He added, “Yes, dogs and cats take the place of children. Yes, it’s funny, I understand, but it is the reality. And this denial of fatherhood or motherhood diminishes us, it takes away our humanity. And in this way civilization becomes aged and without humanity, because it loses the richness of fatherhood and motherhood. And our homeland suffers, as it does not have children.”

CNN, which apparently didn’t care for Francis’s remarks, characterizing them as “surprising coming from a progressive pontiff,” published a report noting he is, in fact, known to be kind to animals.

“The Pope has … been photographed with many animals over the years,” the newsgroup reported. “He’s been seen petting dogs, a koala and a tiger, holding birds and carrying a lamb on his shoulders.”

What?

The pope didn’t say pets are filthy animals. He didn’t even say couples shouldn’t have pets. He said having pets in place of children is anti-life and detrimental to civilization. He addressed specifically the childless sociopaths who prefer their creepily named “furbabies” to actual living, breathing human children.

What point, exactly, is CNN trying to make by pointing out that the pope has “been seen” petting various animals? What’s wrong with that?

Also, CNN would do well to investigate further the imagery the head Roman Catholic Church invokes when he carries a lamb on his shoulders. I can assure you the symbolism there does not translate to standard “pet activity.” Yikes — no one is ever as ignorant as the journalist covering the story.

The pope also addressed the issue of couples who cannot have children.

“How many children in the world are waiting for someone to take care of them,” Francis said. “Having a child is always a risk, either naturally or by adoption. But it is riskier not to have them. It is riskier to deny fatherhood, or to deny motherhood, be it real or spiritual.”

No word yet on whether CNN believes there’s a discrepancy between Francis’s remarks regarding orphans and the fact he has been seen blessing children who have parents!
