FDA Announces Recall of Dog and Cat Supplements That May Cause ‘Paralysis’ or ‘Death’

By Jack Phillips

The manufacturer of cat and dog omega-3 supplements sold under multiple brands said it is recalling products amid concerns they have too high levels of vitamin A, according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Florida-based Stratford Care USA Inc. said it is “taking this action after receiving a single serious adverse event from a sole consumer regarding their dogs’ exhibiting signs of Vitamin A toxicity after consuming the supplement.” It noted that that single report is the “only adverse event” reported associated with the supplements, adding that it is taking steps to remove all the products from the market in collaboration with the FDA.

“Ingestion of elevated levels (of vitamin A) can lead to health issues depending on the level of vitamin A and the length of exposure,” the company said. “Vitamin A toxicity may include general malaise, anorexia, nausea, peeling skin, weakness, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, and death.”

Stratford Care noted that it was only a distributor of the recalled products, not the manufacturer.

For questions for Stratford Care about a pet sickened by the supplements, the firm can be contacted at 877-498-2002, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. Consumers can also email the company at adverseevents@stratfordrx.com or refunds@stratfordrx.com.

Impacted Brands

It also asked retailers and consumers to recall the impacted products. The pet supplements were sold in white bottles under about 60 different brand names at retailers, clinics, and internet retailers like Chewy or Amazon.

The containers have labels with “lot 31133 EXP 04/13/23” and “lot 30837 EXP 10/26/22.”
