Florida lawmakers to pass more measures to block COVID vaccine mandates

Florida will begin a special legislative session on Monday titled “Keep Florida Free,” in which lawmakers will look to pass bills further preventing businesses and schools from mandating the COVID-19 vaccine.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said the session is looking to pass bills that will affect both private and public employers. The session will also look to strengthen rules already in place, making a way for Florida to be “striking a blow for freedom,” according to the Washington Post .

“So I call the special session of the legislature to be able to address this because we need to protect Floridians, we need to make sure that people can put food on the table and that their livelihoods aren’t dependent on whether or not they do the jab or the booster, whatever may come down the pike,” DeSantis said. “You can’t fire people based off this jab. That’s true in the private sector. It’s also true with the public sector.”

One of the bills being considered by the session would affect Medicare- and Medicaid-certified hospitals and nursing homes. A new federal rule requires employees of these hospitals and homes to get vaccinated against COVID-19, but in the state of Florida, these businesses are prohibited from doing so.

The bills would give employers the option to allow exemptions for workers, including religious or medical reasons, proof of prior infection, agreeing to partake in periodic testing, or wearing personal protective equipment. Some features that DeSantis wanted included in the bills will not likely make the cut, including the removal of COVID liability protections from businesses that issue vaccine mandates, according to the outlet.

DeSantis announced on Nov. 4 he and the state of Florida would sue the Biden administration over additional vaccine mandates. He claimed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rule, which targets employers with 100 employees or more, is “not consistent with the Constitution.”

On Thursday, DeSantis threatened to send buses of illegal immigrants to President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware if the federal government kept sending “clandestine” planes to Florida filled with migrants detained at the US-Mexico border.
