Uganda Passes ‘Anti-Homosexuality Act’ Into Law, With Death Penalty in Some Cases

Uganda has passed an “Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023”, imposing a death penalty in some cases and up to life imprisonment for violating the law. More than 30 African countries already criminalize homosexuality, however, Uganda’s new legislation has been denounced by activists and foreign government officials as the toughest anti-gay measure globally. The law defines “aggravated homosexuality” and its circumstances, including a death penalty for individuals who commit these acts. The law also includes a provision penalizing the promotion of homosexuality. Uganda’s parliament approved the legislation in March.
